Existing platforms / data APIs:

Primary Software Goals

  1. Carbon footprints of products
    • building up carbon footprint data
      • people enter data from investigations, standardising products, origins, types, formats, units of measure
      • find the appropriate category or tag to assign the product or service under
    • people look up carbon footprint
      • of an action, product, event, service already in the system so they choose by drilling down or predictive text or search
      • item has input parameters, e.g. how far to drive, petrol consumption, firstly taken from personal profile, otherwise chosen
      • maybe show overview, alternatives, ranges
    • people log their carbon footprint in their account
  2. Estimated average / virtual carbon footprints
    • people set up their own carbon footprint profile which gives them an estimated carbon footprint
    • number of flights per year, amount of red meat they eat, car model, annual mileage etc
    • this is the background carbon footprint, on which detailed data from above is overlaid
  3. Gamification
    • people see their comparison against average carbon footprint for UK or London
    • teams compare carbon footprint progress
    • kudos points for sustainability actions like eating together / dinner parties (less waste / more efficient)

Long Term Possibilities

  • public website carbon calculator
    • people get a user profile and fill in and keep updating their personal details, e.g. car's fuel consumption, electricity and fuel bills etc
    • email them regularly about new findings and updates to carbon algorithm
  • Lahti FI personal carbon trading and mobility mobile app
    • record & anonymise a set of travel data through the local area
  • link up to supermarket loyalty card schemes to put a carbon footprint on a shopping basket
